Company Tire Policy

Tire Inspection and Maintenance Policy [do not use without legal review – this is an idea that has not been reviewed by an attorney]

As a driver for our motor carrier, adherence to the following policy regarding tire inspections and maintenance is required:

Tire Inspection Tools:

  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Dull probe
  • Tread depth gauge
  • White chalk

Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR):

  • Conduct a comprehensive inspection of all tires daily before starting the route.
  • Complete the DVIR with diligence, recording any tire issues.

Tire Wear and Driver Responsibility:

  • Normal Wear: Report tires showing normal wear in advance for maintenance at an approved tire shop, avoiding extra fees.
  • Adverse Road Conditions: No additional repair costs will be charged for tire damage from unavoidable incidents like nails or debris on the road.
  • Driver Fault: Damage due to driver error, such as curb rubbing, that can wait until reaching an approved tire shop, incurs no extra fees. Repeated negligence may result in remedial training or reevaluation of employment.
  • Failure to Report: If tire issues are not reported through careful DVIR and emergency repair is needed outside the approved tire shop, the driver will pay the difference between the approved and actual repair costs.

Acknowledgment and Training:

  • Watch the Bridgestone and Firestone tire inspection video (https://youtu.be/nXkWQ8NeJ1g) and understand the DVIR’s tire inspection procedures. (Note that bulges discussed in the video are not acceptable anymore, but interestingly, they used to be acceptable under 3/8 inch.)
  • By signing, drivers agree to adhere to this policy, acknowledging they have the necessary tools for tire inspection.

Compliance with this policy will prevent incurring additional costs. Persistent failure to comply may lead to disciplinary actions.
